What is a bar code?

A bar code is a sequence of strokes and gaps of different thickness and pitch, which are read optically by crossed scanning.

It is a symbol key to the database information. It is a unique link to the information stored in the computer system, which can be quickly, easily and accurately extracted from the database.

The fundamental element of the bar coding system is an item number, which does not contain any values and does not contain information about the product.  The item number alone means nothing - it is like a phone number or a number plate. Such approach assumes that the information related to the product shall be contained only in the accompanying documents and the computer database.
